Hello.

I've posted a new recording. Parker performed Steampunk Light at his graduation recital a few months ago. I'm really happy with the final product. Listen to it on the left hand side bar. It can be downloaded from there as well.

I'm getting ready for another school year, as well as a piece for the talented Pianist Vicky Chow. This year is my comps so if you see me out and about, remind me that I should be locked away studying.

Collection Get! Thursday the 12th

My indie pop side project (Collection Get!) had our debut in Manitoba last night. I usually perform as a bass player, DJ or keyboard player, but last night was all three at the same time. Also, transitioning our material from the CD to the stage has been an interesting experience. I hope to do more shows, but Grace and I live in different cities, and that makes rehearsals a bit tough.

I also did some photos yesterday. Hopefully I'll be able to update my blog's bio pics.

Juno

I'm have decided to take the plunge into the world of analog synth ownership. Within 2 days of owning a Juno 106 6 voice poly synth, I am fully embroiled in synth dramma. Voice chip 3 is having problems. Is it the wave generator chip? Is it the voice chip itself? All I know is right now am soaking a 26 year old hybrid chip/board in acetone, hoping to resurrect it from a slow death. Why is this worth it? I was shocked at how incredible the Juno sounds. There is a reason they sold so many.

Good experience though, the music tech seminar I just finished has given me the skills to deal with maintinance issues. Analog electronics were a bit of a mystery to me. It’s amazing what a bit of understanding can do.

Cluster and SteamPunk Light

I am going to be having some new works performed at the cluster music festival in Winnipeg. Also, I will be doing talks at the University of Manitoba, as well as Brandon University.

Also, Ben Reimer will be performing "Train Set" at the Brandon New Music Festival next week.

I'm excited to be coming back to Manitoba.

Names...

I finished the wind orchestra commission. For the first time I've had some naming trouble for the work. Red Shift, was my first choice, but already taken by a Vancouver based group. Also, people see "shift" as "shit" at first glance. Second title was "Intersect", but that title was accused of being generic. ... Now I have Base Five Intersect, which combines things in a nice way. I don't usually have naming problems; this was a first for me.

Currently Extracting parts.

The piece is very dramatic. Big 5th chords running though sound masses and clusters. (Base Five Intersect) I'm excited and I hope the wind orchestra can get into it.

Licks and Riffs

I'm sitting in the dress rehearsal for the Groundswell show "Licks and Riffs". The show is in a renovated theatre called "The Park". The theme of the concer is pop inspired new music. It's an interesting atmosphere to experience some new pieces.

CBC is here. They've got a truck out back. It's always interesting when they are around. Everything CBC is done with their own equipment, between the live sound system. The piece will be broadcast on:

I've moved to a new place and am enjoying a larger incarnation of my studio. I'll submit pictures when it is all finished.

I'm going to be going back to Winnipeg for a premiere on the 20^th. Ben Reimer asked me to do something for his Groundswell show “Licks and Riffs”. It's a piece made out of a little punk riff. … and some light switch and microphone tapping sounds. I stretched out the materials and made it drive.

Might come back AGAIN, for a new festival called "Cluster". I'm trying to work out the details.

Back at McGill after a fantastic summer. Many interesting projects on the go this year. I'm finishing up my pop project from the summer, starting the "Expanded Performance Trio" project with Erika and Parker. I've got the wind ensemble coming up fast, and some smaller commissions.
